About This Calculator

A birth chart is a precise snapshot of the solar system at the time and place of your birth. This calculator uses Vedic astrology (Jyotish), the classical astrological tradition of India. It differs from Western astrology in a key way: it uses the sidereal zodiac, which is aligned with the actual constellations in the sky.

To correct for the gradual shift of Earth’s axis over time (known as the precession of the equinoxes), Vedic astrology applies an adjustment called the ayanamsha. This calculator uses the Lahiri ayanamsha, a standard in modern Jyotish practice. It creates a difference of about 24 degrees between Western (tropical) and Vedic (sidereal) placements. For example, a Sun at 3 degrees Pisces in Western astrology is a Sun at 9 degrees Aquarius in your Vedic chart.

Your chart shows the positions of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. It also shows your Ascendant (Lagna), the zodiac sign rising in the east at the moment of your birth. Any retrograde planet is marked; a retrograde planet appears to travel backward from our perspective on Earth. As a bonus, the calculator also includes the outer planets Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. They are uncommon in traditional Jyotish but significant when in tight aspect to your natal planets.
